Fed Up of Your Job? Try Job Crafting Before You Look For a New One

Most of us spend a significant portion of our waking hours at work, often viewing it as tedious. However, imagine if your job was fulfilling, left you feeling satisfied and allowed you to contribute to something greater.

Job crafting is the process of actively shaping and reshaping the tasks, relationships, and perceived meaning of one’s job in order to make it more personally fulfilling for you and beneficial for the organization. It is an approach that allows you as an employee to take a proactive approach to your own job satisfaction and engagement.

One way of crafting your job is by looking at the tasks you perform on a daily basis and identifying those that align with your strengths, interests and values. Once you have identified these tasks, you can try to allocate more time to them, or even propose a new project or initiative that allows you to utilize your skills and passions. For example, If you are a creative person, you may be able to propose a redesign of the company’s website or a new marketing campaign.

Another way to craft your job is by looking at your relationships at work. Who do you interact with on a regular basis? Are there individuals in your organization that you would like to interact more with and those who you would like to interact less with? You can look for opportunities to interact with people who inspire and motivate you, or to collaborate on projects with them.

It is important to reflect on the meaning and purpose of your job. How does your job contribute to something bigger than yourself. Can you think of any other ways that you can make a bigger impact to help the organization in a more meaningful way. Reflecting on the purpose of your work can give you a sense of fulfilment.

By making small changes you can experience big improvements in your own well-being and job satisfaction.
